How to Stop Your AI-Generated Adverts Looking Like Everyone Else’s

2026-10-05

There is a new problem emerging in AI-generated marketing.

We can often spot it immediately.

The advert looks polished. The colours are dramatic. The headline is huge. There are icons everywhere. There are five different messages fighting for attention. The offer, the features, the benefits, the website, the call to action and half the company brochure have somehow ended up on one image.

It looks impressive for a second.

Then it looks like AI made it.

And increasingly, that matters.

As more businesses use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and other AI tools to create marketing content, simply producing something with AI is no longer unusual. The challenge is producing something that still feels deliberate, distinctive and appropriate for your brand.

The problem is rarely that AI is incapable of producing good creative work.

The problem is often how we instruct it.

More information does not always mean a better result

A common assumption is that the more information we give AI, the better the finished result will be.

So we paste everything in.

Company history.

Products.

Services.

Prices.

Features.

Testimonials.

Contact details.

Offers.

Benefits.

Brand messages.

Then we say:

“Create an advert.”

AI tries to be helpful.

So it uses as much of that information as possible.

The result can become overcrowded because the AI has not been told what matters most.

It has been given the ingredients, but not enough direction about what to cook.

That distinction is important.

The answer is not necessarily a longer prompt

There is a strange contradiction developing around AI.

People are being told that to get better results they need to learn how to write increasingly sophisticated prompts.

So instead of asking AI to create an advert, they are encouraged to write paragraphs explaining roles, objectives, audiences, formats, styles, restrictions and output requirements.

That can work but, it also creates another problem.

If AI is supposed to save people time, why should every receptionist, manager, business owner, student, administrator or salesperson have to become a prompt engineer before they can use it effectively?

Most people do not want to study prompting.

They want to get something done.

They want to say:

Create a flyer.

Improve this image.

Write this advert.

Turn this idea into a video story.

Rewrite this complaint.

Create a job description.

Make this image cinematic.

Remove the background.

Create a social media campaign.

The difficulty is knowing how to communicate those instructions to AI clearly.

AI needs direction, not just information

Good AI output often comes from surprisingly simple decisions.

What is the main message?

What should be removed?

What should stand out?

Should the design be minimal or dramatic?

Should the image use a fisheye effect?

Should the advert contain one headline or ten pieces of information?

Should AI preserve the original photograph?

Should it redesign the image or simply update one element?

Those are instructions.

And instructions are often more useful than another 200 words of background information.

This is where short commands become interesting.

A command such as:

/fisheye

/freezeaction

/facebook-ad

/youtube-thumbnail

/update-flyer

immediately gives AI a clearer indication of the task.

You then add your own information and context.

The command provides direction.

Your information provides substance.

AI does the work.

But who is expected to remember hundreds of commands?

This creates another obvious problem.

Most people are not going to remember hundreds of AI commands.

Nor should they have to.

We do not memorise the dictionary before writing an email.

We search for the word we need.

That thinking is one of the reasons we built XpressPrompts.

XpressPrompts is a searchable short-command prompt dictionary designed to help people tell AI what they want it to do.

Instead of trying to remember specialist prompt terminology, you search for the task.

Find the short command.

Add your information.

Then use it with AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and others.

The objective is not to replace human creativity.

It is to make communicating your creativity to AI easier.

Your AI content should still look like your content

This may become increasingly important as AI-generated marketing becomes normal.

The brands that stand out will not necessarily be the ones using the most AI.

They may be the ones giving AI the clearest direction.

Your photograph.

Your offer.

Your customer.

Your tone.

Your judgement.

Your idea.

AI should help execute those things — not bury them underneath every design trick it knows.

That means sometimes telling AI to add more.

But just as importantly, it means knowing when to tell AI:

Remove that.

Keep this simple.

Use my original logo.

Do not change the photograph.

Make the call to action the focus.

Use fewer words.

That is prompting too.

In fact, it may be some of the most useful prompting of all.

Perhaps the future of prompting is shorthand

The next stage of everyday AI adoption may not be about teaching everyone how to write enormous prompts.

It may be about making the instructions easier to access.

Search the task.

Choose the command.

Add your context.

Get the result.

That is the idea behind XpressPrompts.

Because better AI results do not always start with more words.

Sometimes they start with a better command.
